3 April 2004, Saturday, Early Afternoon

Ostrowite (Osterwick) is a picture-perfect town, especially the church, church-yard, and parsonage. We all walked our separate ways through the churchyard, which included a cemetery.

In the churchyard, we found the grave of Anna Matyja, born 25 February 1915, and died 1 May 2003. The inside of the church was also beautiful.

Inside the church, we took a celebratory picture of Günter, Karen, and Kurt holding Günter's chart of the family:

Günter's great-grandfather Joseph Mathia married Günter's great-grandmother Anna Maria Renk at the altar in Osterwick on 24 July 1870.

Kurt and Karen's great-grandfather Joannem Adalbertum Mathia married Kurt's great-grandmother Regina Maria Thiede at the altar in Osterwick on 8 May 1871.

The chart that Günter is holding shows that Joseph and Joannem Adalbertum were brothers, both sons of Adalbert Mathia who was born 11 April 1794. That makes Günter a 3rd cousin to Kurt and Karen.

Karen and Kurt went to the parsonage to talk with the priest. His name is Reverend Kazimierz Matyja. He was born 11 October 1938 in Jablonowo Pomorskie. That is northeast of Torun (Thorn) and south of Kwidzyn (Marienwerder). He was very friendly and helpful. He has the church batismal, marriage, and death registers for time periods after the films in Salt Lake City. We made an appointment to come back on Monday to look at them.
