3 April 2004, Saturday, Late Afternoon From Ostrowite we drove to visit Raciaz (formerly Reetz [pronounced ray-tz]). As one turns north from Route 240 toward Raciaz, the road is almost perfectly straight and lined on both sides by very large, old trees. |

Raciaz is rural and quiet. |

We first stopped at the church. We're not yet sure exactly when it was built. |

|
Raciaz lies by a small lake. Our present-day maps are not detailed enough to show the name of the lakes, but our map from the 1800s names it as the Reetzer See. If nothing has changed, it is probably called Lake Raziaz. The large and peaceful cemetery overlooks the lake. The brickwork on the walls matches that of the church. |

The only Mathia we found in the Reetz cemetery was Bronislawa Matia, born 1 March 1908, and died 2 June 1972. |
