Meaning
of the Mathia - Matthia Name
- According to William F. Hoffman, author of
"Polish Surnames: Origins & Meanings", our
name means "kin of Matthias," the apostle chosen to
replace Judas after the Resurrection.
- Günter Mathia of Haunsheim, Germany has
provided this alternate explanation of the origin of the
Mathia - Matthia name and the subsequent migration to West
Prussia:

The Mathiaker
|
Die Mathiaker (in
Herrschaft. Letztlich wurden sie von
den Franken vereinnahmt.

The Mathiaker (in
English)
The German tribe "the
Matiaker," which settled by the
Rhein and was mentioned by Tacitus in
the listing of German tribes, was completely
or partially conquered by the Romans
under Caesar. With the vanquishing of
the Romans by the Alemanni, the Matiaker
came under their rule. In the end they
were subsumed by the Franks.

Und immer wieder wurde
das Land zu knapp. Man rodete die germaischen
Urwälder, oder wanderte aus. Dazu boten
sich die fast menschenleeren Urwaldgebiete
Osteuropas an. Die "Mathia"
sollen im 13. Jahrhundert aus "rheinischen
Gebieten" in Westpreußen gesiedelt
haben. Wahrscheinlich hat der Deutsche
Ritterorden sie als Siedler geworben,
um besiedeltes Hinterland für seine
weiterführenden Eroberungen zu haben.
Nach der Besiegung des Deutschen Ritterordens
durch die Polen 1408, kamen sie 1466
unter polnische Oberhoheit. Nach
der dritten Teilung Polens kamen sie
zu Preußen.

There was always a shortage
of land. One could clear the German
primal forests or could emigrate. That
is why the almost unpopulated ancient
forests of East Europe were so
inviting. The "Mathia" were
supposed to have settled in West Prussia
from the "Rhein Areas" in
the 13th century. Probably the German
Knightly Order invited them as settlers
in order to have a settled rearward
base for their ongoing conquests. After
the conquest of the Germany Knightly
Order by the Poles in 1408, the settlers
came under Polish administration. After
the third division of Poland, they became
a part of Prussia.
