Note on Polish pronunciation from Bob Matthia, 9 Dec 1999:

Like we discussed earlier about the spelling of MARIANNA SLOMIONKA (vs STOMANKA) ---- here's another one of those "weird" spellings. Vincent's last name is written SWIATEK, with a little "hook" under the "A". Because it's written that way (and I don't know what the official label is for an "A" with a "hook" under it) ---- but when the name is pronounced, it would sound like "SWIANTEK" (the "W" being pronounced like a "V"). But I've seen this same kind of "hooks" under not only an "A", but also an "E", "I", "O" and "U". In other words, the vowel with a "hook" under it becomes "AN", "EN", "IN", "ON" and "UN". So phonetically, "SWIATEK" becomes "SWIANTEK". I really don't know which way it should be entered into the database ---- but, I just wanted to tell you about it. (You already both probably know all about this "AN", etc.... business, heh?)
