Hi Karen,

Good to hear from you. My research of the MATHIA family surname hasn't "gotten out of the garage" yet, since I can't seem to find where in Poland my ancestors came from!! :-)

My gr-grandfather was JOSEPH MATHIA (born about 02/1833 in Poland/Germany), married to MARY (STOMANKA??). According to the 1900 Census, they were married about 1864 & immigrated to the U.S. in 1881. I don't know where else in the U.S. they may have lived, but in 1900 they were living in Berlin, Wisconsin, and owned a farm. (This very same farm is where my Dad & the rest of his brothers & sisters were born).

This JOSEPH & MARY had three sons that also lived in Berlin, Wisconsin. (According to the 1900 Census, they actually had 10 children, but only 3 survived).

These sons were:

ANTON MATHIA (born 10/1866, died 01/1933) married MARTHA POLACHOWSKI (born 09/1875, died 0/1918) about 1895.

JOSEPH MATHIA (my grandfather) (born 03/14/1871, died 09/27/1931) married THERESA STROINSKI (born 08/06/1874 in Town of Seneca, Green Lake Co., WI., died 09/16/1962) on 01/13/1902.

FRANK MATHIA (born about 1875, died unknown) married MARY MACHOL (born about 1880, died unknown). I don't know when they were married.

I would appreciate ANY help that you might be able to give me so as to further my research. I most-certainly would be willing to "donate" any info I have to the WWW sites, but as you can see, it's very limited.

Please DO get back to me ----- I look forward to hearing more from you.

Thanks again for getting in touch.

Take care & have a good day.

Hi Kurt & Karen,

I just was browsing thru my "paperwork factory" here, and was looking at the death record of my grandpa Joe (husband of Theresa Stroinski). It's a copy of the State of Wisconsin document. On the record, his father is shown as JOSEPH MATHIA and his mother is shown as MARY SLOMIANKA (notice the "L" instead of the "T").

I'll be able to verify this when I get the films in hand and start reading
them ----- but perhaps, when you found the birth record of FRANZ, was the mother's name written SLOMIANKA ---- where they write the "L" with a line through it? ..... so that when a person "reads" it, it might be interpreted as a "T" ?? (Hopefully, you can understand what I'm trying to ask ----- but I do know that the Polish alphabet has two kinds of "L's": one with the little line & one without.

Happy Halloween!
Bob

Inbetween these two e-mails, Kurt sent Bob images of the original records so that he could review for himself the name spelling.

Hi Kurt,

I think we can safely change the spelling of MARIANNA's last name to SLOMIANKA. If I remember my Mom's explanation of these two "L"s correctly, she told me the one with the little line was pronounced sort of like a "W". So the pronounciation of MARIANNA's last name sounds something like "SWOMIANKA".

Let's keep the two families separate ---- at least until I have a chance to start digging in the films. Based on how long the last order I made took, it may be several more weeks before I get them. However if Karen or you should perchance have an opportunity to "seek out" JOSEPH's and ANTON's record, and we see the same parents' names, then I think we could safely merge the data together :-)

Thanks again........

Bob

Hi Kurt,

. . . . I've reviewed the REETZ baptisms on #0531408 for my Joseph Mathia & Marcyanna Slomionka, and have found a total of 5 children born between 1863 (the year that they were married) and 1882 (the end of the film). 2 other children were already found on the TUCHOLA film (#0462777). In summary, they were married in 1863 (in REETZ), then had 5 children in Kl. Komorze (1863, 1864, 1866, 1869 & 1871 -- per #0531408), then had 2 more children in BIALOWIEZA (1874 & 1877 -- per #0462777).

If the 1900 Census data is correct, they supposedly had a total of 10 children and immigrated in 1881 --- so there are still 3 more kids to account for!

If MARCYANNA's est. DOB is anywhere near right (1835 - 1839), she would have been 38 - 42 years old at the time of the last-known birth (1877). Do you think it's possible that they moved again (after 1877, from Bialowieza) and still had 3 more kids??
